Honourable Member, Mr Pravin Kumar Jugnauth

We write to you today with a matter of utmost urgency regarding the future of the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, a cherished national heritage.

The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden holds a signi- ficant place in the hearts of both Mauritians and inter- national visitors. For over two and a half centuries, it has served as a sanctuary for endemic species, an educational resource for generations, and a haven of tranquillity for those seeking solace within its grounds. Regrettably, its once-vibrant greenery, flourishing flora, and serene ambience are vanishing before our eyes. It is disheartening to witness such neglect and external intrusion befall a place that has touched the lives of a nation.

We initiated a petition that has earned substantial support from concerned citizens, environmentalists, scientists, and advocates from various backgrounds. In the past three weeks, the online petition has been viewed by over 66,000 individuals, with 3,560 already affixing their signatures, and it has been shared more than 2,000 times. This collective voice represents a compelling plea for the intervention of all members of parliament.

This open letter has also been disseminated to all members of the Mauritian Parliament to ensure that you are fully apprised of the concerns expressed by your constituents. We beseech you, as elected repre- sentatives of the people, to thoughtfully consider the contents of this open letter and to take the necessary measures to secure the future of the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

As our campaign intensifies, we intend to declare October 1 as the commemorative day in perpetuity to safeguard the integrity of the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

Sincerely, Serge D. Astruc
